The storm this past weekend severely damaged the Lake Sebago staging area we would use for the race, causing the hill to collapse, serious beach erosion and the collapse of sections of the road and parking lot. The Park will not allow the public to access the Lake Sebago area, and restoration of Lake Sebago will take several weeks if not longer. The only other possible staging area is Lake Welch, which already has an event on 09/11/11. Unfortunately, we are left with no option but to cancel.
Fortunately, all construction at the Park will be complete this year and the race will return next spring with the full contingent of 9 fields on the old course. We are very excited to return to the course that makes Bear Mountain one of the best races in the northeast and look forward to hosting premier races at Bear Mountain in 2012.
This year will mark the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy where we lost one of our club members – Nancy Morgenstern. Nancy worked at Cantor-Fitzgerald in the World Trade Center. She was a category 4 racer for the club, riding with the Axis sub-team, and had placed second in the Spring Bear Mountain race that year.
