CRCA Subteam Profile: Team Setanta
CRCA subteam Setanta has had substantial success in early 2013, including Billy Wherley's April 5 win and overall win in the Cat 5 field of the NYC Spring series, wins in the Cat 3 fields of Battenkill and Hunter Spring by Jesse Walker, a win by Joseph Grgic in the Cat 4 field of the Dave Jordan Central Park Classic, and a recent win in the M4/5 field at the Rockleigh Criterium by our up and coming junior racer, Andrej Vogel. This past weekend, Graham Macbeth took 2nd in the M3/4 field of the Wilmington-White Face race on June 8, and Andrej Vogel and Joseph Grgic went 1-2 in the Cat 4 field of the June 9 White Plains Criterium. See this link for Joe Grgic's race report.
Named after an mythical Irish warrior (and founded twenty years ago by four Irish racers in the CRCA), Setanta is now multi-ethnic and "the oldest, continuously active sub-team of the CRCA," according to team manager, Jeff Vogel (no relation to Andrej Vogel). The range of recent Setanta results across multiple categories shows how Team Setanta has broadened from being a primarily Cat 4 team in years leading up to 2009 to also developing, recruiting and supporting upper category racers. As of June 2013, Setanta has nine Cat 4 racers, six Cat 3 racers, and two Cat 2 racers (including our newly-upgraded, Jesse Walker). Jeff Vogel adds, "Team Setanta is always looking for potential new members with the skills and ability to contribute to the team. If you are interested in becoming a member of Team Setanta, please email info@teamsetanta.org or just strike up a conversation with one of us on the road or at a race."
For the past years the racers on the team have enjoyed significant coaching support from sponsor Ken Lundgren of Elite Endurance Training Systems and equipment and service from our longtime shop sponsor Bicycle Habitat. 2013 has seen the addition of several new sponsors, including an excellent bicycle apparel maker too little known in the New York area, JLVelo Racing, which makes all of their high-quality apparel in the USA with fully-paid workers, using nearby-sourced materials at a green-engineered factory. Another new 2013 sponsor is Steven Glick of Sacred Massage near 92nd St. and Broadway. Steven specializes in sports, deep tissue and trigger point massage therapy, and is offering a special $70 introductory rate for CRCA members to try a one-hour massage (click here for contact info for Steven; mention "Setanta"). Other 2013 sponsors include Herbalife (makers of 7 performance nutrition products), OA Products (makers of Leg Salsa embrocation, Breathe Strong and chamois cream), Global ImageWorks, Oasis CD&DVD Replication and Design, David Duhan Legal Services, Optometrist Dr. Martin Arkin, P.C., Klein Chiropractic Associates, Michael Kuo General Contractor, and our team manager and accountant, Jeff Vogel, CPA.
